Good Indoor Air Quality This Summer!

T

Although it doesn’t really even feel like spring today in Toronto, summer is just around the corner. Soon it will be air conditioning weather and spending time indoors to beat the heat. Make sure you have good indoor air quality for the summer to make sure you and your family stay healthy.

Here are a few issues that can negatively affect your indoor air quality especially with the hot and humid Toronto and GTA weather coming up.

We can’t stress enough that a comprehensive and professionally indoor air quality assessment is the most important first step in keeping your indoor air quality healthy. Think of an air quality test as a ‘physical for your home’. Once you know what your indoor air quality problems are, the easier it is to improve your indoor air quality and the air you breathe.

GTA Indoor Air Quality Threats:

  1. The most obvious culprit for poor indoor air quality this summer is heat and humidity. If your temperature is too high, the air can feel very uncomfortable. Depending on how hot this summer is, heatstroke is possible indoors. Your solution is making sure you have properly functioning air conditioning system this summer.
  2. The next obvious issue is elevated humidity. With the hot Toronto, summers come humidity. Air conditioning naturally reduces the indoor relative humidity and keeps the indoor air comfortable. It is a proven fact that certain bacteria and viruses, including COVID-19, flourish at low humidity but also in indoor relative humidity over 60%.
  3. Airborne dust. With seasonal allergies to pollen, ragweed and moulds in full swing this spring, summer will not be any different. An abundance of these allergens every summer can have a negative air quality effect indoors on seasonal allergy sufferers. High efficient dust and particulate filtration system is key. Most furnace filters (even though marketing claims) are not able to efficiently reduce the indoor allergen load. A central HEPA filtration system is designed to make your indoor environment allergy-free.
  4. Ventilation is the next important factor in good indoor air quality. A house that does not have fresh air coming into the home will have all sorts of air quality issues. Odours, condensation, bacterial and mould growth issues are all attributed to poor airflow. Most homes with poor ventilation will also have an increase in airborne dust as well as accumulation of VOC’s, gases, CO and CO2.

Want good indoor air quality this summer? Make sure your air conditioning system, the furnace filtration system, as well as your ventilation system, is in good working order. If you’re not sure if you need any of these systems, consider our indoor air quality test.

Do you smell odours coming from your vents when you start up the air conditioning system? This could be a bacterial and mould issue on the cooling coils of your air conditioning system. This can be a significant indoor allergen and can lead to sinus infections and respiratory disease if not caught early. Air conditioning systems can collect dust overtime on the cooling coils. These systems have constant condensation and dampness that can develop a biofilm or bacterial growth. Mould spores can also develop into mould growth on these coils.

As air used for heating or cooling your home travels past this bacterial and/or mould growth, allergens are released into the duct system and into your indoor air that you breathe.
