Fall Indoor Air Quality Check List

Kids are slowly going back to school and the weather is definitely starting to feel like fall. This means heating season and more time spent indoors is just around the corner. Here is your Fall Indoor Air Quality Check List.

With everything that is going on right now, the possibility of a second wave as well as cold and flu season also starting…you need to make sure your indoor air quality is the best it can be to keep your family healthy and safe this fall.

Here are some obvious things to check:

  • When is the last time you had duct cleaning done? Duct should be cleaned every 5-7 years.
  • How good is you furnace filter and are you changing this either every season or twice a year? This is depending on which furnace filter system you have.
  • Has your furnace been cleaned and checked? It needs to be clean and in good working order to make sure it provides good indoor air quality and proper air distribution.

With lots of people worried about bringing home bacteria and viruses, most of us in the GTA are frequently cleaning and disinfecting our bathrooms, kitchens and high traffic areas with disinfectants and cleaners. But are we following the label and are we cleaning as well as we think we are? Just because you’re using a disinfectant doesn’t mean you are actually cleaning and disinfecting fully.

Do you have a biofilm in your ducts or home that is making you sick?

What is a biofilm? A biofilm is a collection of bacterial cell build up that stick together and can form almost anywhere. In a home, biofilms can form on any surface. Biofilms can form on teeth in the form of plaque. This can harbour numerous bacteria…some healthy and some harmful. These are bacterial ecosystems that in many cases form a protective layer over the cells or organism protecting it from other bacteria and environmental changes including cleaning solutions and disinfectants.

The problem indoors is that unless your cleaning method as well as cleaning solution can penetrate this biofilm, bacteria and viruses growing on and under this biofilm may not be neutralized. They can still pose a health threat even though you just cleaned and disinfected your home.

We can test your indoor air quality for biofilms, bacteria, mould and viruses.

Here are some thing to check if you’re concerned about proper indoor air quality:

  • Do you have proper ventilation? Are you getting enough fresh air?
  • How high are your airborne dust levels? Do you need HEPA filtration?
  • Is your vacuum cleaner polluting the air?
  • Do you have a hidden mould growth issue? Do you have an increase in airborne mould spores?
  • Do you have a biofilm build up that is preventing the disinfectants from killing viruses and pathogenic bacteria?

Only an indoor air quality assessment or air quality test of your home can answer these questions. We can test your home for indoor air quality triggers and provide you with detailed recommendations on how to improve the indoor air quality of your home.
