Air Conditioning Season Is Coming…Are Your Ready?

It’s still well below seasonal in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) this week, however, as you remember that will soon change. Air Conditioning Season is coming…are you ready?

Now is the time to have a careful look at your furnace and air conditioning system as well as all your air purification systems to have a safe, healthy and comfortable summer. There is nothing more uncomfortable than high humidity and high heat. So if you’re air conditioning system is older than 15 years…it will likely not last much longer.

A Healthy Home has both good indoor air quality but should also have good comfort as far as temperature and humidity is concerned.

Health Canada, the CDC as well as the WHO all agree that proper indoor temperature and relative humidity settings are key in preventing bacterial, viral and mould growth issues indoors. Having the right humidity and temperature is not just a comfort issue, it is also important to provide a healthy indoor environment that does not promote bacterial, viral or fungal infestation.

Air conditioning systems not only keep the indoor air cool, they also naturally dehumidify the indoor air. Toronto and the GTHA can get quite humid and muggy in the summer months. The humidity usually starts to rise around May 24 weekend and last well past Labour Day weekend. So having air conditioning systems that work properly is very important. Also, with recent and on going shutdowns, parts and equipment take a little longer to order. Have your HVAC company inspect and order your air conditioning parts or system as soon as you can to avoid having to wait in a hot and muggy house this spring or summer.

Relative humidity indoors should be managed well below 65% in summer months. Humidity in the Toronto and GTHA area and Southern Ontario in general can range in the 75% to 90% range on some days. Having a properly functioning and properly sized air conditioning system will keep the indoor relative humidity well below the 65% range. RH levels over 65% can lead to surface mould growth on and inside wall cavities leading to negative health reactions and poor indoor air quality. RH levels over 65% can also support longer bacterial and viral survival on surfaces leading to other health complications and diseases.
